What is Parent Coordination?

Parent coordination is a form of dispute resolution for high conflict divorced or divorcing parents. It is a non-confidential, child-centered form of dispute resolution when mediation has proven to be ineffective. The unique and empowering aspect of parent coordination is the fact that it is a non-confidential service in which the provider may report back to attorneys and the court by way of memo or testimony if necessary. The goals of parent coordination include:

  1. Assessing the emotional impact of parental conflict on the child
  2. Safeguarding the emotional and physical needs of the child
  3. Monitoring and modifying time-sharing arrangements as a means of reducing conflict and loyalty binds for the child
  4. Observing family progress and compliance with court orders
  5. Mediating parenting concerns and disputes (pre and post divorce)
  6. Assisting parents to create a detailed Cooperative Parenting Plan
  7. Balancing the needs of the family with the requirements of the court
  8. Educating parents regarding the impact of their behaviors on their children
  9. Educating parents on the importance of an effective co-parenting relationship on their child’s adjustment
  10. Educating parents on how to function as co-parents rather than adversaries
  11. Educating parents on communication and negotiation skills
  12. Facilitating an effective and age appropriate parenting plan (pre-divorce)
  13. Monitoring parental behaviors
  14. Monitoring the child’s adjustment
  15. Monitoring compliance with court orders and agreements
  16. Monitoring any parental alienation or visitation refusal
  17. Documenting and reporting any impasse or non compliance
